Designed for the real task

Visibility without casual access to the hazard.

Clear guarding can help operators monitor product flow, identify faults and inspect the process while maintaining physical separation. The panel, frame, fixings, openings and access method must work as a complete guarding arrangement.

  • Thickness and panel span selected for the application
  • Cut-outs and openings reviewed against reach routes
  • Edge treatment, bends and fasteners detailed for durability
  • Cleaning agents, heat, UV and scratch exposure considered
  • Doors and removable panels positioned around genuine tasks

Survey to handover

A controlled route from machine problem to fitted guarding.

Mechanical panels, doors, safety devices and machine response are coordinated within an agreed project boundary.

01 · SURVEY

Understand

Review the machine, hazards, access tasks, cleaning, changeovers and production flow.

02 · DESIGN

Engineer

Develop the guarding layout, materials, openings, door arrangement and interfaces.

03 · BUILD

Manufacture

Cut, form, machine and assemble the agreed panels, frames and access hardware.

04 · HANDOVER

Install

Fit, check and document the agreed guarding and safety-system functions.

Access and integration

Clear doors designed as part of the safety function.

A transparent door is more than a panel on hinges. Frame stiffness, sag, over-travel, handle position, safe distance, stopping time and interlock mounting all affect reliable operation.

Where access is required before hazardous movement has stopped, guard locking or another safeguarding strategy may be needed. We can coordinate physical guarding with suitable safety controls and validation within the project scope.

Production environments

Guarding adapted to the machine and sector.

PACKAGING

Filling & packing lines

Visibility around conveyors, fillers, cappers, labellers and wrappers.

AUTOMATION

Robot & assembly cells

Clear enclosures around pick-and-place, testing and automated handling.

METALWORKING

CNC & fabrication

Panels selected around swarf, fluid, impact and tool-access requirements.

FOOD & DRINK

Hygienic production

Cleanability, chemical exposure and sanitation access considered early.

PHARMACEUTICAL

Controlled processes

Clear separation with documentation and finish appropriate to the scope.

LEGACY MACHINERY

New guards fitted around established equipment and existing controls.

Direct answers

Polycarbonate machine guard FAQs.

Polycarbonate provides a clear physical barrier with high impact resistance, allowing operators to see the process while reducing access to hazardous movement. The correct grade, thickness, span and fixing method remain application-specific.

Yes. We can produce one-off replacement panels or repeat batches. Photographs, overall dimensions, thickness, hole positions and the original panel or drawing help us reproduce the part accurately.

Yes. Hinged or sliding polycarbonate doors can be engineered with suitable interlock switches or guard locking where the safety function requires it. Door mechanics, stopping time, reset and control integration must be considered together.

Yes. Existing and legacy equipment can often be upgraded with new transparent guards, framed doors and control modifications, subject to survey and a machine-specific risk review.

Oxford Machine Guarding is based in Oxfordshire and supports machine-guarding projects throughout Great Britain. The delivery scope can include survey, design, manufacture, installation, testing and handover.

Send us photographs of the machine.

Add the access task, approximate dimensions and what needs to be contained. We will help you define the next engineering step.

Specify the panel, its support and the access task together.

A useful polycarbonate guarding enquiry distinguishes a damaged component from a change to the guarding arrangement. These lead to different survey and design questions.

Replacing a plastic guarding part

Identify the panel location and drawing revision, photograph both sides and record the outline, bends, holes and surrounding frame. Explain why it failed: impact, scratching, cracking or a change to the machine. A sample helps establish geometry; it does not prove that copying its material or thickness will address the present hazard.

Prepare a replacement-panel enquiry Assess damage and record the replacement decision

Choosing clear fixed protection

Separate the overall panel size from the unsupported opening in the frame. Mark cable passages, product openings and adjacent gaps on the layout. Describe what the guard must prevent or contain before selecting sheet thickness; the fixing and support arrangement matters alongside the clear material.

Understand thickness and support

Planning an opening guard

List each access task, how often it occurs and which hazards remain when movement stops. Show the proposed door swing or slide, handles and maintenance space. An interlock interface needs to be considered with the machine response and task; adding a switch alone does not establish an adequate safety function.

Review clear access-door options

For installation or pre-assembly, agree who verifies dimensions, provides the mounting interfaces and checks the completed machine. Use the survey, pre-assembly and handover checklist to define the scope before manufacture.
